Since 1998 Gus has been the playwright-in-residence for Equalogy. Gus is the Artistic Director of Flux Theatre Ensemble www.fluxtheatre.org. He has had several plays produced around the country.
His first play produced off-Broadway, Carrin Beginning, was nominated for a Newsday Oppenheimer for "Best New Play Premiering Off-Broadway". The NY Times called it "A pleasing palliative". Backstage said it was "Absolutely delicious...there's passion, conflict, and moments of poetic insight". "The power of Schulenburg's vision makes for an unique, unforgettable experience", said CL Online. The Irish Times called it "Entertaining and thought provoking". "It's 'Jesus Christ Superstar' all over again, this time with a regional Irish twist and a dash of James Joyce...Schulenburg's efforts here are worth a look" said Theatre Reviews Limited.
His play Kidding Jane was workshopped in the Portland Stage Company's "Little Festival of the Unexpected" 2001 and published by Stage and Screen. It was a finalist in the Clauder Competition for Excellence in Playwriting 2001, a finalist in the Playwrights' Theater's "Plays for the 21st Century" 2001, and a runner-up for the Princess Grace Playwriting Fellowship 2001.
Riding the Bull was workshopped at the Bay Area Playwrights Festival 2002 and was a Finalist in the Reva Shiner Full Length Play Contest. It was produced at the Theater for the New City in NY and again for the NYC Fringe Festival in 2007.
